week 6 production log
sunday 13th july 2014
This week i had to make sure that every single bit of my documentary was up to date and done at a good standard, i came in and stayed at school until my documentary was looking strong and on thursday i came in for the whole day to finish of my docummnetary. i had Mrs Greenfield and Mr Mallen look at my work to see if there were any mistakes and both of them said it was good so i am confident in my documentary a this moment in time. I came across 1 technical problem and that was when i moved most of my footage to add in a small bit, i ended up jumbling my sound around so it didn't match or be in sync so i had to re work it so it wasn't different to the footage. it took time but i got it bak and it was fine again, i fully finished editing on thursday and i was the first to get it done. All i have to do now is to sign my name to say it was my work and then i am done.

week 5 production log
Sunday 6th July 2014
This week was all about me editing all of my filmed footage and start making a documentary with what I have got, I filmed over 2 hours of footage within one day so I was very impressed by that because it gave me a secure documentary image straight away. I just had to make sure that everything else I filmed worked and so far it has but I still have a lot to do but it's not challenging unless I chose it to be. The technical challenges that I came across this week were that my footage flowed so there were no hiccups or obvious jumps throughout the footage, it takes time to make it work but when it does I am happy. Over the next week I need to make sure I have music throughout my documentary and I need to make sure that I get all my editing done to a high standard. So far my documentary is coming together well.
week 4 production log
Sunday 29th June 2014
This week I focused on getting all my little bits of filming done so I didn't have to carry on filming through the excessive weeks, it was all simple filming of me talking to the camera in the park and also other little simple bits which weren't hard to film. I had no problems filming any of the footage so I didn't take long getting it all done. The technical challenges that I did come across though were bits like being creative because I noticed that my shots were sometimes repeated and that can become boring very quickly so I had to pick different angels. Over the next week I need to edit all of my footage together and actually having visuals of my documentary being done.
week 3 production log
Sunday 22nd June 2014
This week i had to carry on with filming different parts fro my documentary, i had to make sure that i was near to completion with all my filming so i have less to do and more editing in the next week. I had no logistical problems again for this week, so everything went smooth. The technical challenges that i came across when filming was none because it was easy filming to do and i knew how to get it done quickly. Over this next week i hope to get some few bits of filming done and i also hope to start editing all of the work together so i can get it done and be able to put in more improvements.
week 2 production log
Sunday 15th june 2014
This week i got some more filming done for my documentary, i got some more interviews done and filmed so at this moment in time i have over 1 hour and 30 minutes of footage already filmed and i still have a bit to do. The logistical challenges that i faced during this week was nothing, i didnt have a problem through this week so every thing was simple and calm. The technical challenges that i faced where to be able to set everything up and make sure i am filming shots to a good standard. Over the next week i am aiming to go to croydon to film footage of my step dad because he is a father living away from his child and i am also hoping to interview my brother as a child living away from our mum. I will also need to film footage of me talking about certain things at certain parts in my documentary. By next week i want to have all of my footage filmed and done so i can edit and finish my documentary.

week 1 production Log
Sunday 8th June 2014This week i had a lot of work to get done, so i had to be on the ball with all the work so i will not get behind. I also planned to go to match mothers meeting on Saturday 7th June and it was down in slough so i had to be prepared for that as well. When me and Aarun went to slough to film we came across no problems because everything was simple and we also had a simple lay out as well but overall everything went well because i got 7 interviews with 7 different stories and point of views, all of the participants that took part were open and told there story while on film but 1 who was very emotional did not want to be filmed due to what was happening but she still answered the questions and almost made me cry due to her touching story. By my next production log i hope to have filmed more footage of me and also to have got some footage edited on there as well.

Narrative arc
Section 1 –
Opening to my documentary
What?
Having loads of different clips of mums with their children and then a black screen with my title of my documentary, i will also have nice music playing over the top instead of being just quite. I will do this because the audience will not know what my documentary is going to be about so when my title name does eventually pop up they will understand what the pictures are about.
Where?
N/A
Who?
Clips from internet. so everyone that will be in them are unknown.
Duration of segment?
This segment will last a time of 30 seconds, i chose this amount of time because i think that it will give the audience time to think what the documentary is going to be about.
Section 2 –
piece to camera about the subject of my documentary. i would like to use a long shot pan because i can pan from the playground to me talking about what my documentary is going to be about.
What?
I am going to be walking towards the camera as i talk about the documentary and what i may find as the ending result, i want to keep the audience engaged so what i say has to sound engaging at all times.
This is where i will use the mode participatory because i will be part of the documentary because you can see me talking to the camera.
Where?
Where?
Going to be in a park where there are swings and slides in the background.
Who?
Me (Presenter)
Duration of segment?
This segment will take roughly 40 seconds to do because i am going to be talking for a while so the audience can understand the aim of the documentary.
Section 3 –
Me introducing interviewee from my location. i will use a mid shot so you can see a bit of my body and my head as i introduce the interviewee.
What?
I will be standing in the park from where i have just spoken about the subject of my documentary and i will then introduce the first interviewee by saying there name and whether they are for it or against it.
Where?
I will be in the park still so the audience don't get confused at all.
Who?
Me because i will be the presenter and the presenter will always introduce and also talk about the subject as well.
Duration of segment?
10 seconds because it wont take me long to introduce the person.
Section 4 –
Then i will cut straight into the interview. using a fade cut so it is smooth and not out of place.
What?
I will use a cut that is suitable with my type of documentary so people don't get confused with what i do. I am going to use a traditional fade out and in so its smooth without it looking bad.
Where?
N/A
Who?
There will be no one during the cut but when it fades into the interview it will be me and my interviewee sitting there like we are on a chat show.
Duration of segment?
5 seconds because it is only a fade and it shouldn't last a really long time.
Section 5 –
Me interviewing the interviewee. I will use a mid shot and close up so you can see the interviewees body movement then also have close ups to see their pain or there emotion while they speak. of the interviewee and also a mid shot of both of us having the interview.
Me interviewing the interviewee. I will use a mid shot and close up so you can see the interviewees body movement then also have close ups to see their pain or there emotion while they speak. of the interviewee and also a mid shot of both of us having the interview.
What?
I will be interviewing my interviewee by asking them question relevant to my subject and also getting information about how there story had got to its position it did, its going to be very personal so i'm going to have to use close ups as well because i will be able to capture true emotion coming from the mothers face as she tells me her story and also i would like to see why she joined the charity as well.
Where?
I am going to do this interview in a cafe or in a park in London, i am going to use one of these locations because they are easily accessible and my interviewee is coming from a distance away and it will be easy for them as well.
Who?
It will be me (presenter) and a mum.
Duration of segment?
It will last roughly 40 seconds, this gives me enough time to get key information that i need to hear and use.
Section 6 –
Section 6 –
After the interview i will cut back to me. use a cross dissolve cut because it is different and it also changes the way my documentary is.
What?
I will use a cut that is suitable with my type of documentary so people don't get confused with what i do. I am going to use a traditional fade out and in so its smooth without it looking bad.
Where?
N/A
Who?
There will be no because it is a cut but then after it fades back in you will see graphics and pictures of the charity.
Duration of segment?
5 seconds
Section 7 –
Talking about the charity and what it does. long shot of me standing still with the park in the background, this will give realism within my documentary as well.
Talking about the charity and what it does. long shot of me standing still with the park in the background, this will give realism within my documentary as well.
What?
I'm going to have clips and videos in the background while graphics bullet point what i'm saying so it is clearer for everyone watching what i am on about. I will have to talk clear as well and also make sure that i don't give the charity a bad name, i doubt that i will do that because i am going to say what the charity actually does for many mums around the country.
Where?
N/A
Who?
me (presenter) doing the voice over while the clips are happening.
Duration of segment?
It will last an average of 25 to 30 seconds. this will give me time to give the main points of what the charity does.

Use a cut to go back to me interviewing someone else. fade cut because it works and it is nothing over the top.

N/A
Who?
No one as a cut will be seen rather than someone standing there.
Duration of segment?
it will take 5 seconds to do the cut because they only need to be short so they don't bore the audience watching.

Section 9 –
Me then interviewing someone who joined the charity due to them being apart from their child. Mid shot of me and the interviewee sitting down and i will also include close ups so you can see the pain the mothers go through as they talk.
Me then interviewing someone who joined the charity due to them being apart from their child. Mid shot of me and the interviewee sitting down and i will also include close ups so you can see the pain the mothers go through as they talk.
What?
This is where i am going to interview another person but this time they will be someone who has just joined the charity and also how they are now reunited with their child, this interview will be good because i will be able to get views from someone who is part of the public and also a joiner to the charity.
Where?
This interview will take place in slough because i will be attending a meeting between lots of mums and i will be interviewing them.
Who?
A mum who joined the charity and me (presenter)
Duration of segment?
This segment will take an average of 40 seconds, this will give me time to find out information from the many questions i will ask.

I can then talk to the camera about ways mothers can also get help with the whole situation like a family counsellor, i will then introduce the family counsellor. long shot so you can see me standing and talking to the camera. and you are also able to see what my body movement is as i express my view.
What?
This will be a clip where i talk to the camera about the whole idea of a family counsellor and what they have to offer as well rather than just going through the charity, there are many ways you can get help.
Where?
I can be in a park expressing the advantages of the charity and while i'm talking i can have small pictures in the corners of the charities logo so they know what i am exactly talking about.
Who?

Duration of segment?

Interview with family counsellor. mid shot of the family counsellor as i interview them because then the audience will gather all the information as he or she says it. you will be able to understand how the counsellor works by seeing there body movement.
What?
This will be an interview between me and a family counsellor where we will see their points of view on my subject and also see what they have to offer as well. This part can be an alternative for many people viewing my documentary, they can see this and chose this rather than the charity so it is good to offer them other options.

Who?
Family counsellor and me (presenter)
Duration of segment?

Proposal
Aims
My Documentary is all about 'mothers living without their children' and what i am going to portray in this documentary are things which can teach the audience watching. I am going to create a documentary that looks closey into Match for mothers and also i am going to talk to many different mums without their children and see what the charity has done for them. i dont just want to get one point of view so i am also going to try and get views of a few dads aswell to see what they say about the whole situation with mothers and before the documentary has even begun to be made i know that the dads that i interview are going to be very bias and sexist so i will have to ask question that can swerve these types of answers, i also want to get views from a family counsellor and see how they deal with familys who are in these situations.
Content
I am going to have many interviews with lots of different people who have different opinions so then people watching can get all sides of the story rather than hearing bias answers throughout, the people i am goign to interview are people who are for the charity like mothers who are without their children and the people against will be the men because they can have a different point of view about the subject and i will also interview people like family counsellours because they can be the solution to all the arguing and problems that familys have. I am going to have to explain everything that the charity does for mothers.
Target Audience
The target audience i will be aiming my documentary at are to woman who are aged 16-50, i have chosen women as my main target because the documentary is about women without their children and i think that this docuemnatary can bring all mums together and help them make a stand for what is right. It can also teach everyone what is happening with this situation because i dont think that many people actually know what is happening so it can definately teach everyone something. I also want my documentary to appeal to men as well in a way so they can put there own opinion on the subject.
Format
The modes im going to use are the participatory mode and the expository mode, i chose the participatory mode because i want to be the one who is part of the documentary by asking questions and also talking to camera during different parts in the documentary.
I chose expository mode because i think that i could do a talk over while im showing clips or
something, this is better than just looking at pictures during a documentary.
I chose expository mode because i think that i could do a talk over while im showing clips or
something, this is better than just looking at pictures during a documentary.
Genre
The genre of my video is going to be a documentary, I want my video to teach everyone something rather than them watching it and not knowing anything at all, i will have to have infromation that is going to teach the audience smartly. Also i want all of the interviews to be able to be heard and understood properly. i want everyone that watches to be able to express there views at home rather than listening to the views from the documentary.
Style
Most of the camera work that will be in my documentary is going to be mid shot and long shot and maybe a few close ups to grab the true feelings of the mothers without their children. My editing skills will come in hand here because i will have music that i will have to edit to very wisely otherwise it wouldnt suit my docuemntary. The graphics will have to be very simple so it doesnt look ridiculous when the documentary is fully made.
The documentary i would want mine to look like is the documentary about the bumps on the roads form the one show. The way they laid out the small documentary was good because they were able to get views from many people rather than none at all. They had many interviews from 3 different type of people and they were able to get views which audience can relate to and also be against depending on what is said. If my documentary is slightest like that then i would be happy because it shows me that i got what i needed and i completed the task i was given.

Analyzing the competition
This program is called 'Sleeping with the family' and the channel that this program is from is MTV, it was first broadcasted on Monday 6th April 2014 at 8:00 pm. This show had 115000 views from within the country and this may not seem a lot but it truly is.
This program will have nothing that is similar to how i want my program to look like, my program will be full of facts, and this program is going to be all about what parents and the teenagers want, I chose this documentary as an example because it has children in it and you get to to see how a family is and everything and when i create my documentary your going to see the results of a breakup and the pain that the mum has without her children living with her. This documentary will have nothing similar to mine so our documentaries will be very different. I think my show would have a challenge beating the views that this program got but i don't think it is impossible to do. Because my program is based on teaching many new people new things i think that that would win due to the amount of views i should actually get.
This program is named 'super nanny us' and it is broadcasted on channel 4 and the first one was on Wednesday 14th July 2004 at 1:00 pm. This show has had over 5 million viewers throughout the first series and this number of views is extremely high but there are over channels which can easily double that amount of views.
This show is based on facts being taught to a mum who is finding hard living with her children, she is struggling so she brought in someone to help her out. This show will definitely teach people like my video would and due to this it gained a lot of viewers so i would definitely hope that the similarity will gain the same amount of viewers, The own similarity from this example is the fact that she is a single mother raising two children, this is a kind off similarity because mine would be about the mums but the only difference is having the mum living without the children and you will be able to see the pain that they have due to this. My show would beat the amount of views that this show got because mine is something that hasn't been shown on TV before and i think that just because of that i think it will get more views.
This program is named 'The Jeremy Kyle show' and it was shown on ITV and the first program was broadcasted on 4th July 2005 at 9:25 am. The amount of views this program got was 2 million views and i think that this is a respectable number for this type of program.
This shows similarities are nothing like me because this show is more about talking and having many guests on the show, my show will be different because i will be talking to many people on there own rather than having a group of people talking together all at once or one at a time Also this show is made for people to have arguments and be horrible to one another, my documentary that i am hoping to make will allow the mums to open up and say how they feel without anyone bringing them down. My video would beat this show in views because it is all about learning something new rather than experiencing the old, and when people get the chance to learn something new, they will take that opportunity up.
1) Based on this research, what broadcast day and time would best suit your documentary magazine show?
Well for my idea its all about mums and how they feel living without their children whether it is long distance, or if the dad has taken the child away through divorce. so i think when i pick my broadcast time and everything i will have to be specific otherwise i can chose the wrong time. The show out of these three i would chose to broadcast my show would be ITV because this is a program which many people watch and i naturally think my program would fit comfortably what is already shown. I would chose a time of around 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, i think that this time would be perfect because it will be when most people are sitting down watching TV and i know that many people watching will want to see what it is about rather than not knowing anything about it but i would also say that there can be many people who are against a program like mine due to people favoring the opposite sex, it will be traditional that women will be more drawn to this subject than men but i don't want that to happen because i want people to see both sides of the story rather than hearing about farther's for justice all the time. I think my documentary will work well when it is done with the timing and show i wish to put my show on to.

Secondary research for my final idea
1)What does the organisation (matchmothers) actually do?
Well this organisation is a charity which has started up for mothers who are apart from their children and it basically supports this women and gives them hope and also stops them from being sad all the time. You also get to hear the many views of other women who are without their children as well and they say that when you open up about something you feel so much better and that is probably there moral as the charity.
A quote from the website which basically explain what it does is,
'MATCH is a charity that offers non-judgemental support and information to mothers apart from their children in a wide variety of circumstances. Our members include those who are sharing parenting and those who have little or no contact....' (http://www.matchmothers.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9&Itemid=3)
2)How do mums benefit from joining this organisation?
Mums definitely benefit from joining this because they get to express how they feel without having the mic taken out of them like others may have had before, so this charity supplies confidential chats where they can say anything they want with other mothers listening as well and it is good for the mothers to do this because then they can get support with the whole situation that they are in. They also know that they have that secure thing to bounce back on to when they are likely to be in need of help or to just be in need of a question that needs answering but the positives for these women is that it always there to help you no matter what.
A quote that is from the website tells me basically what they do to help the mothers.
'When you join MATCH you will have access to a group of women who share similar feelings and experiences. We understand the isolation that you may feel as a mother apart and look forward to hearing your story. We hope you will benefit from all we have to offer.' (http://www.matchmothers.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=2)
It also supports many mums from different points of view rather than just the stereo typical one of parents being divorced. This picture shows the other ways a mum can be apart from their child.
3)Have mums thought about making there opinions global?
There are always mums joining this charity and they are also having there opinions kept quite for the time being but i know for a matter of fact that they want to so the organisation can become relatively popular like farther for justice but for the time being i think the organisation and all mums are just going to stick with the website and also the closed chats that they have going on all over the country. If the mums do want to start making there point global then i wouldnt see anything getting in the way of them being able to do this, i would like to see this happen just so mums have somewhere to stand in an argument instead of always being over powered by farthers for justice. I also think that many mums want to have the same level of acknowledgement as fathers for justice and they can only do this if they want to make a stand.
This quote from the home page from the website is basically saying that the main thing is their children rather than how they feel. The charity doesn't want mums to put pressure on the children, they want the children to make there own choices and this also may be why mums dont want to make a big deal out of it like farthers for justice have done.
'We believe that children have a basic human right to continue to be part of a loving, nurturing family network for life, no matter how many times that family re-makes itself, no matter where their mothers live.' (http://www.matchmothers.org/)
4)How long has the organisation been running and has numbers increased since?
This organisation has been running for more than 20 years and it has been going really strong. The numbers are always increasing so they would have increased by more than 70% since. The organisation is always increasing every day and many new comers who are completely new to this experience are able to join this and go to chats to fully explain there storys with many other mums who are in the same position. There is no sign that the organisation is going to stop so for many on going years the organisation will just keep increasing dramatically. And as i said new mums will not have to keep there story quite. i found out these facts from my mum who helps with this organisation.
5)What is the organisations long term goal?
I would say that the organisations long term goal is to keep it running smoothly and also adding many new members from all over the country, My aim during my documentary would be to find out wether they are going to make things global for the whole country to know about and i would also like to see if they have any interests in making it avaliable for all countries rather than just ours. The organisation would just like to spread all the mothers story's to other mothers and also to be able to carry on helping them out with there problems.
How has this research developed your documentary idea?
The research is definitely hard to find because the website that i used (http://www.matchmothers.org) doesn't really have exclusive information that i could use to help me out with my documentary idea, so when i actually come to filming it, i am going to have to be very committed with my questions to my interviewees and also i will have to make sure i can get access to these people so i can ask them questions and find out more answers in depth, its a shame because i wanted to find out loads of information in depth rather than not knowing anything at all, i think i found out the basics of the charity but i say that a few questions i needed answers for cant really be answered from a certain website. But the research has made me more confident with doing this idea because it shows me that i can find out information that i don't know and also maybe my audience wont actually know. so i think it is good to teach me and also teach the audience something new.

Documenting Documentaries (Modes)
Documenting documentaries (Modes)
There are 5 different modes that are used during all different types of documentaries. The 5 different modes that are used in documentaries and these are;
-The Expository mode
-The Observational mode
-The Participatory mode
-The Reflexive mode
-The Performative mode
There are also 3 types of conventions that a documentary will contain and these are;
Realism-
Realism is used in a documentary to keep the audience engaged at all times, realism documentaries contain lots of real things that have actually happened. Everything that you through out the documentary is actually real and you can have real footage shown, real witnesses to the incident. Nothing will ever be reconstructed when a documentary contains realism. To prove a documentary is real, it can be filmed with a hand free camera and the lighting and sound may be bad quality due to it being filmed when the incident happened.
A documentary would also use realism to keep the audience engaged at all times due to it being intense through the real footage being shown.
Dramatisation-
Dramatisation would be used in a documentary to make the documentary tense for the audience watching. Dramatisation documentaries contain lots of different types of music at certain times throughout the documentary and whether the music is used at the right time it can keep the audience engaged and glued into to watch because when music becomes tense it naturally keeps the audience watching because they don't know what is going to happen next or during the music bit. The only thing that dramatisation does that can alter the story is that they can add things which automatically makes them manipulate the real story and emphasise a lot of new points to make the story sound bigger than what it naturally was. But this doesn't stop the audience in any way from being distracted by the story line.
Narrativisation-
Narrativisation would be used in a documentary to make the audience watching follow a clear and understanding story line but sometimes the story isn't clear but still understood. When a story line is set, it sometimes become obvious for the audience and they can have an idea of where the story will end but even when they guess they still want to know so they will carry on watching. Narrativisation is also done by having someone do a voice over through the footage so it is exactly like a story is being told. They usually use well known voices as well for voice overs so it keeps the audience engaged at all times.
The Expository mode (Voice of God)
A documentary would use this type of mode to keep the audience engaged by having a well known voice and an authoritative voice as well. The person doing the voice over (verbal commentary) for the documentary will be the narrator as he will explain what is happening throughout the narrator may also be argumentative towards certain things in a logic way.
This example that i have chosen for the expository mode is a documentary about nature and these types of documentaries are known for being this type of mode. This documentary has David Attenborough as the voice over and this was the correct move to make because David Attenborough is known for doing nature documentaries and he has a voice which is informative and clear so everything he says actually teaches you something that you may not know.
The person who created this documentary Ian Gray used this type of mode because he knew it would more appealing to the audience, he also knew that having the presenter David Attenborough would be a pull over to many of the original and new audience. He was also able to capture many beautiful shots that you cannot see everyday.
The key conventions that are used in this type of documentary are realism and narrativisation.
This documentary contains Realism because everything that you see throughout the documentary is 100% real, the filming crew cant instruct animals to fight at certain points so the footage is genuinely authentic and this also helps make the whole documentary itself seem brilliant, plus the audience are always engaged to see things like that happen through quality and well timed footage.
The documentary also contained Narrativastion because it shows stories in ways about certain animals that are doing something which may have not been seen before. the stories also teach us things which we can use as general knowledge so the audience do gain good information from stories.
The Observational mode (window on the world)
A documentary would use this type of mode to help catch footage that is naturally happening rather than it being scripted. If this is used then the filmmaker should never enter the sight of the camera, he must remain behind the camera at all times and the people that are being filmed must act like the camera is not there at all.
The documentary maker used this mode so he could see what happens as time passes instead of stopping everything all the time and telling everyone what to do. Everything you see is done at the peoples own will, no one has told them to talk at certain times or even to act in a certain way. It works so well because it is fluent and it never looks like they've stopped then restarted.
What happens in this video is very tense because you see one of the fisherman jump straight into the sea to help grab the whale, in no way would a TV crew tell a young man to risk his life just for a TV programme. so this also aids that this was done at the guys own will.
The conventions used to help the documentary are realism and dramatisation.
The documentary uses Realism because everything you see in this clip is genuinely real, nothing has been asked to do so realism actually tells the truth with what is happening. footage seen can shock the audience as well because what actually happens like the man jumping into the water, this can shock the audience because it is real footage and that actually happened.
The documentary also uses Dramatisation to make it more engaging for the audience and they can do this through what we see. it also makes it tense when you hear certain things being said as well like 'he will die if he doesn't get out' when you hear things like that you can feel tense and not know what will happen.
The Participatory mode (also called interactive)
A documentary would use this type of mode to show the audience that the filmmaker is involved to help out but he has absolutely nothing to do with the actual story line. The filmmaker will not take the lime light from the story so whatever they do during the documentary, it must be a small role so they don't take the full attention. There views may be involved in the documentary so the the story has different views but they cant be fully involved in what is actually happening.
The documentary maker used this mode when he made this film to show that everything that initially happened in this story is very inspiring and that he helped out with what was going on was truly a lucky experience but also how deep the story actually going can be another reason why he uses this type of mode.
This film is very gripping because it talks about a certain man that cared about the dolphins and there were people that disagreed with what this man did and there was lots of trouble so you are able to see everything that actually goes on throughout the film.
The conventions used to help out this documentary is all 3, realism, dramatisation and narrativisation.
The documentary uses Realism to show that this actually happened, these historic events happened and it makes the whole film tense and engaging with the audience.
The documentary also uses Dramatisation to make it more engaging for the audience like showing clips of people with guns and also the man helping the dolphins as well.
The documentary also uses Narrativasation to make it have a clear and understanding story line, because the story line was so clear the audience that watched were engaged and wanted to know what actually is going to happen next.
The Reflexive mode (Awareness of the process)
This type of mode would be used in a documentary when they want to create something that is not based on truth but just wants to keep the audience engaged at all times. so the documentary basically has reconstructions that are made but these reconstructions can be played with just so the audience don't lose any interest ion what they are watching.
When 'Nick Broomfield' made this documentary he kept everyone up to date and made everyone aware that they were filming so nothing was exactly hidden when this documentary was made, the audience are told throughout what may have happened etc. you might even be told throughout where they got certain information from as well. during the actual full documentary you see nick walk into a persons apartment where he is going to receive hidden information which many people might not know.
When the documentary maker named 'Nick Broomfield' made this documentary he wanted to keep as many people as he could to stay engaged to what the actual documentary is about but to keep it entertaining for as long as possible so he added in bits which were probably not true or may have hints of truth but aided with fakery.
The conventions used to help this documentary are dramatisation and narritivisation.
The documentary uses Dramatisation to hide the real story, it does it very well because you see and hear things which have been tampered with and you will know that that is not true, loyal fans that watch this should be able to identify the lies but the documentary maker used this to his advantage to keep the audience engaged at all times.
The documentary also uses Narrativisation to show a clear story line of what actually happened and having a story line can make sure that the audience are watching most of the time just because they would like to hear what actually happens next.
The Performative mode (filmmaker as participant)
This type of mode would be used in a documentary to show how gripped and attached the actual filmmaker got. They would show footage of the filmmaker getting involved and helping out with certain things. So the whole documentary will have a main story but this time the filmmaker will be a big part of it, this mode is very similar to participatory but the filmmaker is fully involved.
When the documentary maker decided to make this documentary he had to make sure that it will always be entertaining for anyone that actually watched it so when they choose this man 'Kyle Pilkington' to be the one to get involved, that decision was the best because he is a funny guy and this can engage to a lot of the audience that constantly watch at all times.
The documentaries makers aim was to achieve that everyone gets a laugh out of this and also get to see an insight to how other countries do there own thing. so in ways this documentary was smartly made because you are learning as well as laughing at the main person doing all the walking around the countries.
The conventions used to help this documentary are realism and dramatisation.
The documentary uses Realism because they want to show the audience that everything happens is real and none of it is staged. He is put in places for a reason though but the rest is done naturally.
The documentary uses Dramatisation as well and that is to make it tense for the audience when he is asked to do something which he doesn't want to do and you get to see how he truly acts in his own colours. It also makes it entertaining for the audience as well because he sometimes over reacts at the smallest things.
