Documenting Documentaries (Modes)
Documenting documentaries (Modes)
There are 5 different modes that are used during all different types of documentaries. The 5 different modes that are used in documentaries and these are;
-The Expository mode
-The Observational mode
-The Participatory mode
-The Reflexive mode
-The Performative mode
There are also 3 types of conventions that a documentary will contain and these are;
Realism-
Realism is used in a documentary to keep the audience engaged at all times, realism documentaries contain lots of real things that have actually happened. Everything that you through out the documentary is actually real and you can have real footage shown, real witnesses to the incident. Nothing will ever be reconstructed when a documentary contains realism. To prove a documentary is real, it can be filmed with a hand free camera and the lighting and sound may be bad quality due to it being filmed when the incident happened.
A documentary would also use realism to keep the audience engaged at all times due to it being intense through the real footage being shown.
Dramatisation-
Dramatisation would be used in a documentary to make the documentary tense for the audience watching. Dramatisation documentaries contain lots of different types of music at certain times throughout the documentary and whether the music is used at the right time it can keep the audience engaged and glued into to watch because when music becomes tense it naturally keeps the audience watching because they don't know what is going to happen next or during the music bit. The only thing that dramatisation does that can alter the story is that they can add things which automatically makes them manipulate the real story and emphasise a lot of new points to make the story sound bigger than what it naturally was. But this doesn't stop the audience in any way from being distracted by the story line.
Narrativisation-
Narrativisation would be used in a documentary to make the audience watching follow a clear and understanding story line but sometimes the story isn't clear but still understood. When a story line is set, it sometimes become obvious for the audience and they can have an idea of where the story will end but even when they guess they still want to know so they will carry on watching. Narrativisation is also done by having someone do a voice over through the footage so it is exactly like a story is being told. They usually use well known voices as well for voice overs so it keeps the audience engaged at all times.
The Expository mode (Voice of God)
A documentary would use this type of mode to keep the audience engaged by having a well known voice and an authoritative voice as well. The person doing the voice over (verbal commentary) for the documentary will be the narrator as he will explain what is happening throughout the narrator may also be argumentative towards certain things in a logic way.
This example that i have chosen for the expository mode is a documentary about nature and these types of documentaries are known for being this type of mode. This documentary has David Attenborough as the voice over and this was the correct move to make because David Attenborough is known for doing nature documentaries and he has a voice which is informative and clear so everything he says actually teaches you something that you may not know.
The person who created this documentary Ian Gray used this type of mode because he knew it would more appealing to the audience, he also knew that having the presenter David Attenborough would be a pull over to many of the original and new audience. He was also able to capture many beautiful shots that you cannot see everyday.
The key conventions that are used in this type of documentary are realism and narrativisation.
This documentary contains Realism because everything that you see throughout the documentary is 100% real, the filming crew cant instruct animals to fight at certain points so the footage is genuinely authentic and this also helps make the whole documentary itself seem brilliant, plus the audience are always engaged to see things like that happen through quality and well timed footage.
The documentary also contained Narrativastion because it shows stories in ways about certain animals that are doing something which may have not been seen before. the stories also teach us things which we can use as general knowledge so the audience do gain good information from stories.
The Observational mode (window on the world)
A documentary would use this type of mode to help catch footage that is naturally happening rather than it being scripted. If this is used then the filmmaker should never enter the sight of the camera, he must remain behind the camera at all times and the people that are being filmed must act like the camera is not there at all.
The documentary maker used this mode so he could see what happens as time passes instead of stopping everything all the time and telling everyone what to do. Everything you see is done at the peoples own will, no one has told them to talk at certain times or even to act in a certain way. It works so well because it is fluent and it never looks like they've stopped then restarted.
What happens in this video is very tense because you see one of the fisherman jump straight into the sea to help grab the whale, in no way would a TV crew tell a young man to risk his life just for a TV programme. so this also aids that this was done at the guys own will.
The conventions used to help the documentary are realism and dramatisation.
The documentary uses Realism because everything you see in this clip is genuinely real, nothing has been asked to do so realism actually tells the truth with what is happening. footage seen can shock the audience as well because what actually happens like the man jumping into the water, this can shock the audience because it is real footage and that actually happened.
The documentary also uses Dramatisation to make it more engaging for the audience and they can do this through what we see. it also makes it tense when you hear certain things being said as well like 'he will die if he doesn't get out' when you hear things like that you can feel tense and not know what will happen.
The Participatory mode (also called interactive)
A documentary would use this type of mode to show the audience that the filmmaker is involved to help out but he has absolutely nothing to do with the actual story line. The filmmaker will not take the lime light from the story so whatever they do during the documentary, it must be a small role so they don't take the full attention. There views may be involved in the documentary so the the story has different views but they cant be fully involved in what is actually happening.
The documentary maker used this mode when he made this film to show that everything that initially happened in this story is very inspiring and that he helped out with what was going on was truly a lucky experience but also how deep the story actually going can be another reason why he uses this type of mode.
This film is very gripping because it talks about a certain man that cared about the dolphins and there were people that disagreed with what this man did and there was lots of trouble so you are able to see everything that actually goes on throughout the film.
The conventions used to help out this documentary is all 3, realism, dramatisation and narrativisation.
The documentary uses Realism to show that this actually happened, these historic events happened and it makes the whole film tense and engaging with the audience.
The documentary also uses Dramatisation to make it more engaging for the audience like showing clips of people with guns and also the man helping the dolphins as well.
The documentary also uses Narrativasation to make it have a clear and understanding story line, because the story line was so clear the audience that watched were engaged and wanted to know what actually is going to happen next.
The Reflexive mode (Awareness of the process)
This type of mode would be used in a documentary when they want to create something that is not based on truth but just wants to keep the audience engaged at all times. so the documentary basically has reconstructions that are made but these reconstructions can be played with just so the audience don't lose any interest ion what they are watching.
When 'Nick Broomfield' made this documentary he kept everyone up to date and made everyone aware that they were filming so nothing was exactly hidden when this documentary was made, the audience are told throughout what may have happened etc. you might even be told throughout where they got certain information from as well. during the actual full documentary you see nick walk into a persons apartment where he is going to receive hidden information which many people might not know.
When the documentary maker named 'Nick Broomfield' made this documentary he wanted to keep as many people as he could to stay engaged to what the actual documentary is about but to keep it entertaining for as long as possible so he added in bits which were probably not true or may have hints of truth but aided with fakery.
The conventions used to help this documentary are dramatisation and narritivisation.
The documentary uses Dramatisation to hide the real story, it does it very well because you see and hear things which have been tampered with and you will know that that is not true, loyal fans that watch this should be able to identify the lies but the documentary maker used this to his advantage to keep the audience engaged at all times.
The documentary also uses Narrativisation to show a clear story line of what actually happened and having a story line can make sure that the audience are watching most of the time just because they would like to hear what actually happens next.
The Performative mode (filmmaker as participant)
This type of mode would be used in a documentary to show how gripped and attached the actual filmmaker got. They would show footage of the filmmaker getting involved and helping out with certain things. So the whole documentary will have a main story but this time the filmmaker will be a big part of it, this mode is very similar to participatory but the filmmaker is fully involved.
When the documentary maker decided to make this documentary he had to make sure that it will always be entertaining for anyone that actually watched it so when they choose this man 'Kyle Pilkington' to be the one to get involved, that decision was the best because he is a funny guy and this can engage to a lot of the audience that constantly watch at all times.
The documentaries makers aim was to achieve that everyone gets a laugh out of this and also get to see an insight to how other countries do there own thing. so in ways this documentary was smartly made because you are learning as well as laughing at the main person doing all the walking around the countries.
The conventions used to help this documentary are realism and dramatisation.
The documentary uses Realism because they want to show the audience that everything happens is real and none of it is staged. He is put in places for a reason though but the rest is done naturally.
The documentary uses Dramatisation as well and that is to make it tense for the audience when he is asked to do something which he doesn't want to do and you get to see how he truly acts in his own colours. It also makes it entertaining for the audience as well because he sometimes over reacts at the smallest things.
